Boscombe Band was formed in 1886 and its tradition as one of the leading Salvation
Army Bands in the British Territory has been maintained to the present
day.
Situated on the South Coast of England, Boscombe is a suburb of one of
England's premier seaside resorts, Bournemouth, and the band takes full
advantage of its numerous opportunities for evangelism. These include
the Friday night bandstand concerts in Bournemouth
Gardens (Pinewalk), where the band has played since 1948.
It has taken part in several
prestigious Salvation Army festivals at the Royal Albert Hall, Festival
Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wembley Arena. The band was highly honoured
to play for Queen Elizabeth II during her jubilee year and recently
during her brief visit to Bournemouth in May 2004 as well as featuring
in numerous national radio and television broadcasts.
Throughout its history, the
band has travelled extensively both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
They have toured the Netherlands, Sweden, Florida, USA and Canada.
The band has been fortunate
in its history to have had some distinguished Salvation Army composers
as its bandmaster, including Albert Webber, William Walker, Herbert
Mountain, Kenneth Cook and Kenneth Downie.
Since May 2002 the band has been privileged to have as its bandmaster
another distinguished composer, Howard J. Evans, formally Musical Director
for The Salvation Army in the Netherlands and Staff Bandmaster of the
Amsterdam Staff Band.
In 2004 the Band released a CD entitled 'Favourite Marches of the Salvation
Army', featuring many well known and well loved marches of the past
and present. This CD has become a big seller internationally, especially
in the UK and the US.
In August 2005 Boscombe Band, in conjuction with world renowned euphoniumist
Steven Mead,
released a CD called "Locomotion - A tribute to my childhood". This
CD was an opportunity for Steven to perform with the band to which he
belonged for a significant period of his life and which helped give
him the foundation on which he has built his reputation as one of the
world's finest euphonium players. To read reviews of Locomotion see below:
