The Boscombe Band of The Salvation Army

Boscombe Band of the Salvation Army was formed in 1886 and its tradition as one of the leading bands in the British Territory has been maintained to the present day.

The band continues to play an integral part in our Corps activities and it takes full advantage of the numerous opportunities for evangelism that present themselves thanks to the popularity of Bournemouth as a tourist destination. Since 1948 the band have performed each summer in the town bandstands. In recent years these have been predominantly at the Pine Walk bandstand in Bournemouth Gardens where the band can be found most weeks during the summer season.

The band has been fortunate in its history to have had some distinguished Salvation Army composers as its bandmaster, including Albert Webber, William Walker, Herbert Mountain, Kenneth Cook and Kenneth Downie. The band has also had close links with two very prominent musicians from the area in Sir Dan Godfrey and Eric Ball.

Since April 2001 the band has been privileged to have as its bandmaster yet another composer in the person of Howard J. Evans. Howard was formerly Musical Director for The Salvation Army in the Netherlands and Staff Bandmaster of the Amsterdam Staff Band.

Throughout its history, the band has travelled extensively the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and taken part in several prestigious Salvation Army festivals at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wembley Arena. The band was highly honoured to play for Queen Elizabeth II during her jubilee year and again recently during her brief visit to Bournemouth in May 2004.

In addition to this, the band has been seen and heard in many other parts of the world as a result of featuring in numerous television and radio broadcasts, making many recordings and they have also undertaken tours to the Netherlands, Sweden, the USA and Canada. 2011 heralds the 125th Anniversary of Boscombe Band (see posters on the right) and to commemorate this occasion, the band have released a brand new recording entitled "Joy Through The Ages" and undertook a tour covering several countries throughout Scandinavia - Denmark, Sweden and Norway. You can also read the Boscombe Band 2011 Sandinavian Tour blog by solo cornet player Kevin Whittingham.
